Name: Tommy Young
Position: Board Member
Appointed to the Board: 2003
What is your background in agriculture?
I’ve been involved in my family’s farm since I was in the third grade. I’ve seen the industry evolve and made sure to educate myself as those changes happened. I’ve worked with a number of agricultural organizations and companies, gaining valuable hands-on experience. I started farming with my father and two older brothers. Then it was just my brothers and me. Now I farm with my two nephews—one from each of my brothers. Together, we operate under the name Young’s Generation Three Partnership Farms.
Did you always want to be a farmer?
Actually, no! I wanted to be a real fireman. I studied management, and my father once told me not to farm unless I wanted to spend my whole life worrying. I didn’t listen to him. After graduating from college, I formed a partnership with my brothers. I’ve enjoyed being part of our family’s growth. But my dad was right. There’s a lot of worrying, especially when it comes to weather.
What path did you take to become a producer?
After college, I joined my brothers in our family farming operation.
Who inspired your work ethic/approach to farming?
My father, James N. Young Sr., and my older brother, James N. Young Jr., were my biggest inspirations. They always prioritized hard work and the farm, and that mindset rubbed off on me.
Do you grow other crops or raise any animals?
We grow rice, corn, wheat, and soybeans on approximately 7,800 acres.
What is your favorite aspect of farming?
I love watching corn emerge and grow. It’s an absolutely amazing and beautiful crop. It grows so fast you can almost watch it happen.
What is your personal motto?
Strive for perfection in all things.
Are you involved in other professional organizations outside of the Arkansas Corn and Grain Sorghum Board?
Yes, I serve on the AgHeritage Nomination Committee, and I’m Vice President of Farmers Supply Association. I’m also President of the Trails to Tuckerman Historical Society, a member of the U.S. Grains Council Advisory Team, and serve on both the Jackson County Extension Council and the Jackson County Farm Bureau Board.
